Bon Appetit Names Turkey and the Wolf
Best New Restaurant of the Year 2017!

Congratulations to the team at Turkey and the Wolf for winning Best New Restaurant 2017 from Bon Appetit. I couldn't be prouder to be a small part of this killer group of cool kids. Full article and video on Bon Appetit's site here.

These guys continue to make waves in the food scene, so keep an eye out for their next venture. And, please, for the love of god, go eat a sandwich if you can get in the door...

Client Overview

In the Summer of 2015 I was approached by Mason Hereford (former Chef of restaurant Coquette) and Lauren Holton to help them realize a brand for their first restaurant venture together, Turkey and The Wolf. The process that emerged was highly-collaborative, challenging, and super fun.

Merch-First

As we dove into the discovery phase, I started to see how deep the Turkey and the Wolf universe already was in Mason and Lauren's minds. They didn't want to just create a logo and your basic restaurant print collateral, but rather a visual and tactile language that would inform every moment in their space – a truly comprehensive restaurant experience. From day one, Turkey and the Wolf would have a bunch of branded merch for sale – pins, hats, shirts, patches, bouncy balls – as well as other little touches like kitschy mismatched plates, Looney Tunes glasses for cocktails, and action figure order "number" stands, set along side beautiful photos of Mason's biggest food and drink influences from in and around New Orleans.

The brand concept involved a lot of layers, so we decided to hire various designers from Mason and my networks and let them loose on the different components – they would work on the merch while I was designed the logo mark (or "brand anchor", as I call it), which would allow their themes and styles to inform my work.

I was fortunate enough to have collaborated with some very talented New Orleans-based artists – mainly Seth Fountain, Ken Cox and Stewart Freeman – and I believe the final result benefitted tremendously from their influence.

In Spring 2017 while working in at The Warehouse – a beautiful coworking space in the Bywater neighborhood – I met Steve Nutting and Chris St. John, the energetic and driven duo behind Capulet.

Adjacent to the shared workspace, there was a massive part of the building that had been sitting unoccuppied for years and these guys had the vision of opening a restaurant and event space there. After I stepped their team through a discovery process to help align their brand vision internally, they hired me to develop a logo, print collateral and their website.

It was a wonderful group to work with and I'm quite proud of the design work that came out of it. We went through a number of different stock typefaces then moved to hand-lettering, ultimately landing on what you see below; an homage to the buried cobblestone in the historic neighborhood, the train tracks that run down Press street just half a block away, the archways of the facade of the building, and of course, the ever-present perfect food (according to Chris), the sandwich.
